Akron General Medical Center, the flagship facility of Akron General Health System, is a not-for-profit teaching hospital serving residents in five counties in northeastern Ohio. The medical center has more than 500 acute care beds and serves as a regional referral center in a number of medical specialties, including cardiovascular disease, heart surgery, orthopedics, and trauma care. The hospital also operates a freestanding outpatient surgery center and a skilled nursing facility called Edwin Shaw Rehab, housing about 140 beds. Akron General Medical was founded in 1914 as Peoples Hospital.
