June 21, 1903. Caricature artist known for his inimitable sketches of Broadway and Hollywood stars, Al Hirschfeld was born at St. Louis, MO. His first cartoon appeared in 1926 in the now-defunct New York Herald Tribune. Later moving to the New York Times, his drawings appeared on the drama page for seven decades. He was known for hiding “Nina” (his daughter’s name) somewhere in every caricature that he created after 1945. His art is found in many museums, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. He died Jan 20, 2003, at New York, NY.
