On 22 September 2010, Al Jazeera purchased the broadcast station NTV 99 in Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina.[1] They bought the station for US$1.56 million.[2] The channel began broadcasting as Al Jazeera on 11 November 2011 and launched their website on that same day, its appearance mainly based on that of its English counterpart. It broadcasts from the Eutelsat W3C satellite and also has a live stream as both their Arabic and English counterparts do.
According to a report from the Associated Press, "Media experts say they hope the broadcaster will offer objective news to a public that was exposed for two decades to local media heavily influenced by politics."[3] Al Jazeera Balkans has a very modern studio in Sarajevo and smaller studios in Belgrade, Zagreb and Skopje. The station plans to have correspondents in Podgorica, Priština, Mostar and Banja Luka who will report in the local languages. The station will have reporters in based in Washington, D.C., London, Berlin, Vienna, Moscow, Istanbul and Jerusalem by utilizing the resources of the current Al Jazeera bureaus around the world. The network serves viewers in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Kosovo[a], Macedonia, Montenegro, Serbia, and Slovenia.[4]
The channel's editor is Goran Milić.[5]
