Biography

Alaap provides a practical demonstration of bhangra's progress. Founded in 1977 in Southall, their debut album, originally on their own label, focused on traditional Punjabi folk music. Under the influence of producer Deepak Khazanchi and the high energy of disco and rock, Alaap's music went electric and employed drum machines. Later albums took religious themes (Shabe Ghat Ram Bole) or paired them with guests such as Asha Bhosie (Chham Chham Machdi Phiran) and Anuradha Paudwal (Na Dil Mang Ve). ~ Ken Hunt, Rovi
