Biography

Graphic artist and Oscar-winning special-effects expert Alan Maley was responsible for the memorable final scene in Stanley Kubrick's Dr. Strangelove in which Slim Pickens rides a the atom bomb into oblivion. A native of Great Britain, Maley entered the film industry as an assistant sign painter. He eventually became an exceptional matte artist. He was hired at Walt Disney studios in 1964 to work as a supervising matte artist. In 1971, Maley earned an Academy Award for the special effects in Disney's Bedknobs and Broomsticks. Other efforts for Disney include The Love Bug (1968) and its sequel Herbie Rides Again (1974).
