alanine-glucose cycle

A cycle of biochemical reactions in which alanine is converted to glucose in the liver. During prolonged exercise, branched chained amino acids are released from muscles and their carbon backbones used as an energy source, while their nitrogen component is used to make alanine. The alanine is then converted to glucose in the liver, helping to maintain the body's blood glucose levels.
