African Mythology:

Alatangana and an Old Man's Revenge

Kono/Guinea

Alatangana is the supreme being.

In the beginning, Sa, an old man, lived with his wife and daughter in murky darkness, a world without other humans, without animals. Alatangana was appalled when he visited the world of Sa, and he therefore created a more inhabitable world, which gratified Sa and his family. They came to have a high regard for Alatangana, and the god fell in love with Sa's daughter. But when he asked the father if he might marry her, Sa refused. God nevertheless married her, and, because Sa was furious, they moved away, living in harmony, giving birth to seven boys and seven girls, all of different colors, all speaking different languages. Alatangana could not understand the words spoken by his children and, sensing that this was the vengeance of Sa, went to him. Sa said that he was indeed responsible, and so it was that the human races originated. Sa then ordered them to disperse to the far parts of the world. But they continued to live in darkness. They asked Alatangana to do something about their plight, and he sent two birds to ask Sa for advice. Sa sent the birds home, having given them their singing traits: now these birds, when they sang, would summon the light so that humans could emerge from the darkness. This was the beginning of the first day: the sun rose and moved across the sky. Now it was Sa's turn to call upon Alatangana for a favor. Because the supreme god had taken his only child, Sa demanded that Alatangana provide him with one of his own children whenever Sa requested one. They would be selected in Sa's dreams, and would have to come to Sa when he asked. This was the origin of death.
