1933Union Square. The Chicago-born proletarian writer's first book is a collective novel about how a cross-section of inhabitants around New York City's Union Square are shaped by their surroundings. His other realistic novels during the decade are The Foundry (1934), about a Chicago factory, and The Chute (1937), concerning workers in a mail-order company.
