The Old Irish name first for all of Great Britain, or ‘Albion’, and later just for the northern part, Scotland. The change in meaning came from the Irish settlement of Dál Riada in Argyllshire, whose inhabitants were known as Fir Alban [the men in Britain]. See also ALBA.
