Alceste (Gluck: Alceste). Soprano. Wife of Admetus, who offers herself as a sacrifice to save her husband's life. She is reprieved by Apollo in the original It. version and rescued by Hercules in the Fr. version Created (1767) by Antonia Bernasconi; by Rosalie Levasseur in Fr. (1776) version in Paris.
