Opera in three acts by Gluck to a libretto by Calzabigi after Euripides (1767, Vienna); Gluck made a revised, French version (1776, Paris). In the preface to the score he expounded his ideas for operatic reform. Several other composers wrote music relating to Euripides' story, among them Lully (1674), Handel (1727, 1749-50) and Wellesz (1924).
