EC 1.14.15.4; recommended name: steroid 11β-monooxygenase;other names: cytochrome P450 11B2; steroid 18-hydroxylase; P450C18. A heme-thiolate enzyme that converts 11-deoxycorticosterone to aldosterone, by successive hydroxylations at the 11β and 18 positions. Reduced adrenodoxin is a reactant, being converted to oxidized adrenodoxin. The enzyme is normally expressed in the glomerulosa region of the adrenal cortex. Mutations in the CYP11B2 gene at 8q22 are associated with an autosomal recessive disorder that is potentially fatal in infants or may be asymptomatic in adults.?

Aldosterone synthase (or 18-hydroxylase) is a steroid hydroxylase cytochrome P450 oxidase enzyme involved in the generation of aldosterone.

This gene encodes a member of the cytochrome P450 superfamily of enzymes. The cytochrome P450 proteins are monooxygenases that catalyze many reactions involved in drug metabolism and synthesis of cholesterol, steroids, and other lipids. This protein is primarily expressed in the zona glomerulosa of the adrenal cortex. Within the cell, it localizes to the inner membrane of the mitochondria. The enzyme has steroid 18-hydroxylase activity to synthesize aldosterone and 18-oxocortisol as well as steroid 11 beta-hydroxylase activity. Mutations in this gene cause corticosterone methyl oxidase deficiency.[1]
