abbr. for adrenoleukodystrophy protein; a half-transporter of the ABC transporter superfamily that is encoded by a locus at Xp28 (gene product contains 745 amino acids) and is believed to function in transporting very-long-chain fatty acids across peroxisomal membranes. Over 300 mutations are associated with X-linked adrenoleukodystrophy, a condition in which tissues and body fluids have high levels of these fatty acids, particularly hexacosanoic acid (26:0).
