(b Yelizavetgrad [now Kirovohrad], 8 Dec 1892; d Moscow, 25 June 1953). Russian painter. He studied at the Art School in Kiev (1909-11) and at Il'ya Mashkov's studio in Moscow (1912-13). He was a member of the JACK OF DIAMONDS group and the Association of Artists of Revolutionary Russia. He was considerably influenced by French Cubism and Fauvism. Calling himself the 'bloody son of the Jack of Diamonds', he became, like others who had been involved in the movement, a clear representative of 'Russian C?zannism', following Post-Impressionist principles and associated with the development of an indigenous colourist tradition (in which respect the work of Vasily Surikov was of particular significance).
