Review

Nicely played (if somewhat under-recorded) collection of seven film scores composed by Alessandro Cicognini (b. 1906) for Vittorio De Sica's movies over a period of 15 years, beginning with Shoeshine (1946) and ending with The Last Judgement (1961). The music is a curious mix of lyricism and wit, sweeping opera-like passages and small-scale waltz interludes. The music is all appealing, but the most compelling single track is the suite from De Sica's Miracle In Milan, a dazzling display of poignancy and joy, all with a very serious message and intent. Nicola Samale conducts the Orchestra Sinfonica delle Marche diretta and the Coro Santa Cecilia di Fabriano, to scores reconstructed by Giorgio Spacca. ~ Bruce Eder, Rovi
