Plot

In this portrait of celebrated author Alex Haley, his life and the impact of his writing on African-Americans are examined. His highly acclaimed book Roots created an awareness of African-American history as no author had done before, and was the basis for a television series of immense popularity. In this film, Haley recalls how he dropped out of college, and discusses the production of The Autobiography of Malcolm X, and how his grandmother and great aunts in Tennessee told him stories and memories that inspired Roots. ~ Alice Day, Rovi
