Alex McTaggart

Alex McTaggart (born 24 January 1949) is an Australian politician. He is mayor of Pittwater Council and was a member of the New South Wales Legislative Assembly for Pittwater from 2005 - 2007.

McTaggart was elected to the Legislative Assembly in a 2005 by election after the resignation of liberal John Brogden amid controversy.^[1] He backed down on a pre-election promise to resign as Mayor of Pittwater if elected, saying that he can quite easily handle both jobs.^{[citation needed]} In the 2007 State Election, McTaggart was unable to retain his seat.

He ran on a platform of not accepting donations to his campaign from developers or real estate agents.^{[citation needed]} In the 2005 by-election Alex McTaggart campaigned on a platform of saving Mona Vale Hospital,^{[citation needed]} but after his election advocated that the hospital be closed down and moved to Warriewood.^{[citation needed]} He later sought $7.9 million dollars from the State Government for an upgrade to the hospital.^{[citation needed]} He also made himself quite prominent in the Avalon community by spearheading the anti-baywatch movement, which was successful in keeping the production off Avalon beach.^{[citation needed]} He is a supporter of the Ingleside land release which would mean bringing 20,000 people to his former electorate.^{[citation needed]}
