Alexander Agricola

(b ?1446; d Valladolid, late Aug 1506). Franco-Netherlandish composer. His career centred mainly on Italian courts (Milan, Florence, Naples) and the French court, and from 1498 until his death he served Philip the Handsome of Burgundy at home and abroad. His travels brought him renown as a singer and composer. His works include eight masses, over 20 motets and other sacred pieces, nearly 50 chansons and c25 instrumental works. His style is predominantly northern, akin to Ockeghem's, using long, rhythmically complex contrapuntal lines built from short, decorative motifs and linked with frequent yet unobtrusive cadences.
