The Duke was born to Angus Montagu, 12th Duke of Manchester and Mary Eveleen née McClure, now Mary, Lady Angus Montagu, of Geelong in Victoria, Australia. Both his mother and his paternal grandmother were born in Australia.
The Duke has been married three times.
On 17 March 1984 in Australia, he married Marion Stoner.[1] They were divorced in 1996.[1] She is now Marion, Viscountess Mandeville.
On 7 May 1993 in the United States, while still married to Marion, Viscountess Mandeville, he married Wendy Dawn Buford.[1] They were divorced in 2007.[1] She is now Wendy, Duchess of Manchester.[2]
They have two children:
On 21 September 2007 in the United States, he married Laura Smith. She is the current Duchess of Manchester.[3]
In 1984, the Duke was convicted by a court in Melbourne of assault with a speargun.[4] In 1985, the Duke was sentenced to three years jail.[citation needed] However, he was released the following year. In 1991, the Duke was convicted for attempting to sell a rental car.[5] In 2012, the Duke was arrested in Las Vegas after that he allegedly had written for $3,500 a cheque for which he did not have the funds.[2]
When the Duke in 1993 entered his second marriage, he was still formally married to Marion, Viscountess Mandeville. Their relationship had ended within months after the wedding in 1984,[3] and after a couple of years, he moved to the United States.[1] The Duke's first marriage ended in 1996.[1] The second ended in 2007.[1]
The de jure bigamous marriage called into question the legal status of the children who had been born therein. The trustees of the Duchy of Manchester English Settled Estates and indirectly of the Duchy of Manchester Irish Settled Estates sought the directions of the High Court of Justice as to whether they could, under the terms of the 10th Duke of Manchester's settlements, continue to benefit the children.[1]
In July 2011, Mr Justice Floyd stated: ‘Alexander and Ashley acquired the status of legitimacy by reason of the law of the domicile of each of their parents.’[1] He also styled both The Honourable.[1]
