Biography

Though Russian-born, Alexandre Tcherepnin (1899-1977) enjoyed an international reputation, starting in Paris in the 1920s, continuing in Asia in the 1930s and concluding in the USA after World War II. Independent from trends, Tcherepnin developed his own scales and employed a unique approach to counterpoint; his work as teacher proved essential to the development of Western classical music in the Orient. Tcherepnin left behind an enormous number of compositions including operas, ballets, four symphonies, numerous concerti, chamber works, piano pieces and even electronic music. However, his piano concertos and Chinese Concert Études are most frequently revived of Tcherepnin's works. ~ Uncle Dave Lewis , Rovi
