Review

In 1989, Impulse reissued two of Lorez Alexandria's classic 1964 dates, Alexandria the Great and More of the Great Lorez Alexandria, on a single CD. Impulse was a label that generally did right by Alexandria, and that holds true on both albums. From the choice of material to the producers and musicians, all of the pieces fall into place nicely for Alexandria (who was 35 at the time). Alexandria the Great was produced by the prolific Bob Thiele (known for his work with John Coltrane and countless others), while More of the Great Lorez Alexandria was produced by Tutti Camarata. The musicians (Wynton Kelly or Victor Feldman on piano, Bud Shank or Paul Horn on flute, Paul Chambers on bass, and Jimmy Cobb on drums) serve Alexandria well, and the subtle vocalist is in excellent form on sensitive, poignant interpretations of standards such as "But Beautiful," "Angel Eyes," and "My One and Only Love." This CD is well-worth owning. ~ Alex Henderson, Rovi
