It was founded in 1685 as Alexeyevka (or Alexeyevskaya) sloboda, named after Alexey Cherkassky, its first owner.[citation needed] Town status was granted to it in 1954.[citation needed]
Alexeyevka serves as the administrative center of Alexeyevsky District,[3] although it is not administratively a part of it.[2] Administratively, it is incorporated separately as a town of oblast significance—an administrative unit with the status equal to that of the districts.[1] Municipally, Alexeyevka is incorporated within Alexeyevsky Municipal District as Alexeyevka Urban Settlement.[4]
