Statistics Dictionary: Alfréd Haar

(1885–1933; b. Budapest, Hungary; d. Szeged, Hungary) Hungarian mathematician. Haar obtained his PhD in mathematics from U Göttingen in 1909. In 1912 he returned to Hungary and after the First World War he founded the Mathematical Centre at Szeged U.

Alfréd Haar (October 11, 1885 - March 16, 1933) was a Hungarian mathematician. In 1904 he began to study at the University of Göttingen. His doctorate was supervised by David Hilbert. The Haar measure, Haar wavelet, and Haar transform are named in his honor. Together with Frigyes Riesz, he made the University of Szeged a centre of mathematics. He also founded the Acta Scientiarum Mathematicarum magazine together with Riesz.
