Alfred (August Uhlrich) Kalmus

(b Vienna, 16 May 1889; d London, 25 Sept 1972). English music publisher of Austrian birth. He studied under Adler and in 1909 joined the enterprising Viennese firm, Universal Edition, where he fostered such composers as Schoenberg, Berg, Webern, Bartók and Janáček. He went to London in 1936 and inaugurated the London branch of Universal Edition, where he was eventually able to carry on the enterprise shown earlier by the parent company with young radical composers.
