(b London, Jan 1810; d there, 11 Feb 1849). English theorist. Encouraged by his friend, the composer G.A. Macfarren, he produced a controversial Treatise on Harmony (1845, 2/1885) explaining all chords in a key as products of three fundamental combinations; his ideas greatly influenced later musical pedagogy in England through the writings of Macfarren, Ouseley and Prout.
