(b Brussels, 11 May 1823; d Paris, 24 Aug 1906). Brother of (1) Joseph Stevens. He received his early training at the Acad?mie in Brussels under Fran?ois-Joseph Navez, who introduced him to the teachings of Jacques-Louis David. In 1844 he was sent to Paris, where he continued his training under Camille Roqueplan and then under Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts. By the time he returned to Brussels in 1849, his painting displayed a realistic and vigorous character (e.g. The Pardon, 1849; St Petersburg, Hermitage). In 1852 he moved back to Paris, where he resumed his studies with Florent Willems.
