Algernon Darius "Alge" Crumpler (pronounced /ˈældʒiː/; born December 23, 1977) is an American football tight end for the Tennessee Titans of the National Football League. He was originally drafted by the Atlanta Falcons in the second round of the 2001 NFL Draft. He played college football at North Carolina.

In his career, Crumpler has been a two-time All-Pro selection and four-time Pro Bowl selection.

Early years

Crumpler attended New Hanover High School in Wilmington, North Carolina and was a letterman in football and track & field. In football, he started as a tight end and as a linebacker, and as a senior, he was an All-Midwest 4-A Conference selection. In track & field, he was a three-time State Champion on the discus, and won a State Championship on the shot put in 1996. He graduated from New Hanover High School in 1996.

College career

During his last three seasons with the North Carolina Tar Heels, he was named to the All-ACC first team. As a sophomore, Crumpler caught 24 catches for a total of 278 yards, with four of those catches being touchdowns. In his junior season, Alge had 20 catches for 191 yards. His senior season concluded with him amassing 23 catches for 287 yards and one touchdown and he finished second in All-American voting.

Professional career

2001 NFL Draft

Crumpler was drafted by the Falcons 35th overall in the second round of the 2001 NFL Draft.

Crumpler, at 266 lbs., ran a 4.76s[1] 40yard dash, 4.43s 20-yard shuttle, 7.38s 3-cone drill, 22 reps of 225 lbs and a 34" vertical jump at the 2001 NFL Combine.[2]

Atlanta Falcons

Crumpler made his first appearance as an NFL starter in a game against the Carolina Panthers on September 23, 2001. He caught his first two balls for a total of 13 yards. His first touchdown in a game was against the New Orleans Saints, on October 21, 2001. Alge has earned 4 consecutive Pro Bowl honors (2003-2006), and has been the receiving leader for the Atlanta Falcons for two straight seasons. In 2005, Crumpler set the Falcons' single-season record for catches (65) and receiving yards (877) by a tight end[3].

In December 2007, Crumpler was fined by the NFL for wearing black eye strips during a Monday Night Football which had the letters MV and the number 7 written on them in support of former teammate Michael Vick. [4]

On February 15, 2008 he was released by the Falcons.

Tennessee Titans

On March 2, 2008 he signed with the Tennessee Titans. Crumpler made his debut on September 7, 2008 against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

In a divisional playoff game with the Baltimore Ravens, Crumpler fumbled after a reception from Kerry Collins on the Raven's 5, which helped the Raven's ultimately win the game.

On August 9, 2009 in the Titans first pre-season game, Crumpler weighed in at 312 pounds; gaining an estimated 30 pounds during the offseason.

Personal

He is the son of former Buffalo Bills player Carlester Crumpler and younger brother of former Seattle Seahawks and Minnesota Vikings tight end Carlester Crumpler Jr. and older brother of musician Bryan Crumpler[5]

Alge is named after his father's favorite book, Flowers for Algernon. Crumpler is married to Jenn, the couple has two daughters, Kendal and Ava[6].
