Alice Klein

Alice Klein is a is co-founder and co-owner of Toronto's longest-running free alternative newsweekly, Now Magazine and Now Communications Inc.

Klein attended York University where she became involved with the university newspaper, Excalibur during the mid-1970s. Klein was active in left-wing politics during this period and was a member of the Socialist League. Klein met her future husband Michael Hollett during her years at York.

In 1981, Klein co-founded Now along Hollett and several others. Now has remained independent ever since. Although a number of alternative weekly newspapers had been attempted in Toronto without success in the past, Now's early decision to be distributed without charge proved to be crucial in its success.

She continues to write for Now.
