Aligarh District (Hindi अलीगढ़ ज़िला, Urdu: علی گڑھ ضلع) is a district in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. Its district seat is located in the city of Aligarh[citation needed].
The Aligarh District belongs to Aligarh Division.
According to the 2011 census Aligarh district has a population of 3,673,849,[1] roughly equal to the nation of Mauritania[2] or the US state of Oklahoma.[3] This gives it a ranking of 76th in India (out of a total of 640).[1] The district has a population density of 1,007 inhabitants per square kilometre (2,610 /sq mi) .[1] Its population growth rate over the decade 2001-2011 was 22.78 %.[1] Aligarh has a sex ratio of 876 females for every 1000 males,[1] and a literacy rate of 69.61 %.[1]
