a method for automatically obtaining alignments (def. 2) of pairs of protein or nucleotide sequences. Alignment algorithms are generally either global or local — BLAST (basic local alignment search tool) and FastA are probably the best known implementations of local alignment algorithms, and are routinely used for database searching.
