One of the original (sedating) antihistamines, used to relieve the symptoms of such allergic conditions as urticaria and other itching skin conditions. It is available as tablets or a syrup on prescription only.

Side effects:
see antihistamines. Alimemazine may also cause antimuscarinic effects and (more rarely) abnormal heart rhythms, low blood pressure, breathing difficulties, extrapyramidal reactions, and (in high doses) convulsions.

Precautions:
alimemazine should not be taken by people with kidney disease or by women who are pregnant or breastfeeding. See also antihistamines.
