Biography

The one-man project of ¡All-Time Quarterback! began in 1999 as a side project for Ben Gibbard -- who also spends most of his time fronting Death Cab for Cutie. By taking up a collection of broken Casios and an array of other instruments that are held together by duct tape, the end results in a gentle but melancholy dance of lo-fi love songs. With his first demo recorded on a hand-held tape player, The Envelop Sessions were self-released in 1999, followed by a self-titled five-song EP -- including a Magnetic Fields cover -- that came out through Elsinor Records that same year. In 2001, Gibbard inked a deal with Barsuk and reissued the album the following summer. ~ Mike DaRonco, Rovi

¡All-Time Quarterback! is a one-off side project begun by Death Cab for Cutie and Postal Service frontman Ben Gibbard, in the spring of 1997. A series of recordings resulted in two lo-fi EPs (¡All-Time Quarterback! and The Envelope Sessions) on Elsinor Records, which was documenting the Bellingham, Washington music scene. A small tour occurred to support the releases. Gibbard went back to Death Cab for Cutie to record their second album. The song "Underwater!", from The Envelope Sessions, was later re-recorded by Death Cab for Cutie for a 7" single on Sub Pop. In 2002, with both original releases out-of-print, Barsuk Records released the All-Time Quarterback album on CD. The album contains the best of both releases, along with an outtake from the original EP sessions and a video for "Plans Get Complex" (which was shot in a variety of locations across London, including Regent Street and a London Underground train).
