Review

The Photon Band has always seemed to be stricken with the same bipolar influences as the Lilys -- both bands rove back and forth between dreamy, shoegazing-inspired psychedelia and rock-oriented, British Invasion-style psychedelia. The difference is that while the Lilys move between the two on an album-by-album basis, the Photon Band combines them fully -- All Young in the Soul opens with a burst of driving '60s rock with gliding guitar structures from somewhere between shoegazing and '60s psychedelia. The album keeps closer to the first influence than some of the Photon Band's other releases, but its low-fi spaciness lends it a definite affinity with Elephant Six bands like Olivia Tremor Control and their black-lit Beatles-isms. ~ Nitsuh Abebe, Rovi
