Biography

Screenwriter Scott Allan's best-known scripts include such classic Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers musicals as Top Hat (1935), Follow the Fleet, Swingtime (both 1936), and Shall We Dance? (1937). During WWII, Allan was one of Hollywood's preeminent creators of upbeat wartime propaganda fare like So Proudly We Hail (1943) and Here Come the Waves (1944). The New Jersey-born writer got his start when Goodbye Again, a play he co-wrote, was produced on Broadway in 1933. Shortly thereafter, Allan moved to Hollywood and became a successful script doctor. Allan's first screenplay was the frothy comedy of manners Fifth Avenue Girl (1939). All told, Allan penned over 50 screenplays throughout his career. Other notable efforts include his surreal collaboration with Dr. Seuss, The 5,000 Fingers of Dr. T (1953) and Imitation of Life (1959).
