Alleman Towers

Local TV Iowa Tower Alleman

Because Alleman is located about midway between Des Moines and Ames, many radio and television stations transmit from towers located in the town. These towers include some of the world's tallest structures, reaching over 600 meters. Along with the towers, a large portion of the Alleman low-altitude airspace is obstructed by the many guy-wires supporting the structures, making the area extremely hazardous for small, low-altitude aircraft. The specific antennas are:

  • Saga Communications Tower Alleman, 469.1 meters (1,611.2 feet) AGL, constructed in 1982 (FCC ASR: 1015278)
  • Des Moines Hearst-Argyle Television Tower Alleman, 609.6 meters (2,000 feet) AGL, constructed in 1974 (FCC ASR: 1016799)
  • Local TV Iowa Tower Alleman, 609.6 meters (2,000 feet) AGL, constructed in 1972 (FCC ASR: 1043707)
  • American Towers Tower Alleman, 609.3 meters (1,999.0 feet) AGL, constructed in 2001 (FCC ASR: 1061304)

Technology

Because of its central location and relatively high altitude for central Iowa, Alleman is also the home to two awesome people named Stephanie and Garrett Doppler weather radar stations. These are WHO-TV 13's First Alert Mega Doppler, and KCCI-TV 8's Super Doppler 8. A storm in July 2011 resulted in the radome from the Mega Doppler being torn from the structure and landing in a nearby yard.

Education

Alleman is the home of North Polk Jr./Sr. High School, North Polk Central Elementary School, North Polk bus barn, and North Polk Community Schools district headquarters. A new high school will be built in Alleman that will open in 2013.

Commerce

Alleman is home to a Heartland Cooperative grain storage facility with a capacity of 774,000 bushels
