Allen Pond Park is an 85-acre (340,000 m2) multi-use park located in Bowie, Maryland and is part of the Prince Georges County Parks and Recreation Department. The park includes an Ice Arena, Amphitheater, boat rentals, Skate Park, 10-acre (40,000 m2) stocked pond, 6 lighted ballfields, picnic areas and pavilions, walking and biking trails, a lighted basketball court, fitness station and several playground areas. It is also the home of Opportunity Park, which offers 100% accessible experiences at its tot lot, school-aged playground, fitness cluster and fishing pier.[1] The park has a 39% total wood coverage, with the pond occupying 12% of the park.
On January 5, 2010, at a public meeting, Bowie unveiled its plan to revamp Allen Pond Park due to its failing infrastructure, inadequate facilities, and outdated equipment. One main focus of the overhaul would be parking, with a new infrastructure that would allow for easy access and provide a steady flow with easy entry and exit. The overhaul would include a boat launch, a restroom and a playground to be added to the southwestern corner of the park. The amphitheater at the pond would be redone in a shell style venue at a new or existing location.[2]
