An intentional difference in sizes of two mating parts. With running or sliding fits, allowance is a clearance, usually for a film of oil. In this sense, allowance is the space “allowed” for motion between parts.

With force or shrink fits allowance is an interference of metal; that is, a portion of metal in one part tends to occupy the same space as the adjacent portion of metal in the mating part.
