Almansor

Almansor, a tragedy in blank verse by H. Heine, first published in Tragödien, nebst einem lyrischen Intermezzo in 1823. It is set in Spain at a time when the Moorish power is yielding to Spanish Christian expansion. Many of the Moors have been converted, including the beautiful Zuleima, now known as Donna Clara, who is betrothed to Don Enrique, whom she does not love. Her former lover, the Moor Almansor, carries her off, but is overtaken by pursuing Spaniards. With Zuleima in his arms he throws himself to death from a high rock. There are no acts, but the play falls into eight unnumbered divisions.
