The Alor archipelago is located at the easternmost end of the Lesser Sunda Islands, the chain that runs through southern Indonesia, which from the west includes such islands as Bali, Lombok, Sumbawa, Flores, Solor and Lomblen.

The largest island in the archipelago, Alor, is located at its eastern end. Other islands in the Alor archipelago include Pantar (the second largest island in the Alor arcipelago), Kepa, Buaya, Ternate, Pura and Tereweng. Politically, the Alor archipelago forms its own regency (kabupaten) within the province of East Nusa Tenggara, with a population estimated in 2005 at 174,616. This regency is divided into nine subdistricts and 158 villages.

To the east of the archipelago is the Ombai Strait, which separates it from the islands of Wetar and Atauro, the latter belonging to East Timor. To the south, across the Strait of Alor, lies the western part of Timor. To the north lies the Banda Sea. To the west lies the rest of the Sunda Islands.
