Alpha Natural Resources doesn't mind going underground. The company produces steam and metallurgical coal at some 100 mines and numerous preparation plants, primarily in central and northern Appalachia and the Powder River Basin. Alpha became one of the largest coal producers in the US in 2011 when it acquired coal miner Massey Energy, creating a $15 billion energy behemoth. Alpha's sales are divided between low-sulfur steam coal, which is used mainly for electricity generation, and metallurgical coal for industrial customers. The combined companies produce about 120 million tons of coal annually and sell one-third of it internationally. Alpha controls about 5 billion tons of proved and probable reserves.
