The ALS Therapy Development Foundation is a not-for profit biotechnology company that conducts medical research on amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, also known as Lou Gehrig's disease. The progressive neurodegenerative disease attacks motor neurons in the brain and spinal cord. These motor neurons control the movement of voluntary muscles, and when they can no longer send impulses to the muscles (due to ALS), the muscles begin to waste away. The organization focuses on drug discovery and development for a cure for ALS. James Heywood, whose brother was diagnosed with the disease in 1998 and passed away in 2006, established the foundation in 1999.
