2. Mongolia: there are two towns with this name, one previously called Yösönbulag and which is in the Altay mountains.
3. Russia: a republic and a separate territory named after the Altay Mountains from the Turkic–Mongolian
altan 'golden'. The republic was previously the Oirot Autonomous Region, created in 1922 and named after the Mongoloid Oirot people. It was renamed the Gorno-Altay Autonomous Province in 1948 and given republican status in 1992 as the Altay Republic.
