Altec Lansing (formerly Altec Lansing Technologies) is in the business of selling sound. The company is a leading manufacturer and marketer of speaker systems for consumer PCs, as well as sound accessories, such as headsets, headphones, and docking stations for personal digital media. It also makes home entertainment systems and scales its units to accommodate large venues. Altec Lansing traces its name back to audio pioneer James B. Lansing, who founded a company devoted to theater sound systems in the 1920s. Headset specialist Plantronics, which acquired Altec in 2005 to strengthen its position in the PC speaker market, sold the company in December 2009 to a private equity firm.
