Inácio José Alvarenga Peixoto is a famous Brazilian poet, who was born in Rio de Janeiro city, state of Rio de Janeiro in 1744. He died in Ambaca, Angola in 1792. He was a friend of Cláudio Manuel da Costa and Tomás Antônio Gonzaga, who were other important writers of the time.
Biography
Peixoto studied at the Jesuit College in Rio de Janeiro and the University of Coimbra in Portugal, where he met the poet Basilio da Gama, who became a friend. In Portugal, he held various minor local governmental posts.
He shared libertarian ideas with other intellectuals of his time, but pressured by debt and high tax obligations, he found himself aligned with the Minas Conspiracy. While he escaped the more gruesome punishments weighed upon other principals in the crime, Peixoto was still reported as a participant in the plot, and he was deported to Angola, where he died.
Some of his work was included in the Academy of Arcadia curriculum, with the theme of love being one of the most pronounced aspects of his sonnet poetry.
Peixoto was married to the poet Barbara Heliodora.
