An
antispasmodic used in the treatment of irritable bowel syndrome, diverticular disease (which causes abdominal pain and altered bowel habit), and painful periods caused by spasms of the uterus. It is available as capsules and can be obtained without a prescription, but only from pharmacies.
Side effects: include nausea, headache, itching, rash, and dizziness.
Precautions: alverine citrate should not be taken by people with intestinal obstruction due to loss of intestinal movement or during the first three months of pregnancy.
Proprietary preparations: Spasmonal; Spasmonal Forte (a stronger formulation).
