While Alzheimer's disease may not be the direct cause of death, the generally poorer health of a person with AD increases the risk of life-threatening infection, including pneumonia. In addition, other diseases common in old age—cancer, stroke, and heart disease—may lead to more severe consequences in a person with AD.
