(Pāli). An ‘eel-wriggler’, or disputant who uses sophistry to avoid stating a definite position on an any issue. An example of such a philosopher is Sañjaya Belaṭṭhaputta, one of the so-called Six Sectarian Teachers who were contemporaries of the Buddha. His views are briefly summarized in the Sāmaññaphala Sutta of the Dīgha Nikāya.
