Review

The short-lived Amazing Stories was producer Steven Spielberg's attempt to revive the anthology format of past television classics like The Twilight Zone and The Outer Limits -- in addition to Spielberg's longtime collaborator John Williams, the series also featured music from composers including James Horner and Georges Delerue, and while an earlier Varese Sarabande CD featured 1999 re-recordings of two Amazing Stories scores newly performed by the Royal Scottish National Orchestra, this two-disc Intrada collection is the first official release to make available the original sessions. Williams leads off with his stirring Amazing Stories main theme as well as his complete score for the Spielberg-directed pilot "Ghost Train" -- a richly thematic effort on par with the composer's best-known efforts, its palpable mystery and drama quickly establish the series' mythical, larger-than-life scale. Horner's folksy, facile "Alamo Jobe" pales in comparison to the rich backwoods sensibilities of Bruce Broughton's like-minded "Gather Ye Acorns," but Delerue's deeply romantic "The Doll" outshines everything here, summoning both awe-striking beauty and heartbreaking melancholy in sumptuous detail. ~ Jason Ankeny, Rovi
