(acoustics) The pervasive noise associated with a given environment, being usually a composite of sounds from sources both near and distant.


Sounds, other than those emitted by a target, surrounding a listener or mechanical sound detection system (such as sonar) that interfere with hearing or locating the sounds emitted by a target.
