Ambiguous images are optical illusion images which are crafted to exploit graphical similarities and other properties of visual system interpretation between two or more distinct image forms. These are famous for inducing the phenomenon of multistable perception.
Ambiguous images are important to the field of psychology. Rorschach Test is made up of all different ambiguous images. The ambiguous images presented in the ink blot test require the test taker to interpret the image. The more ambiguous the image, the more mental activity will be required to make an interpretation, allowing the test taker's personality to be expressed.[1]
Some often used synonymous terms are reversal images, puzzle images and perceptual rivalry.
